I used to make them for my dad. I mixed saw dust and parafin wax together and mashed it into cupcake tins. Used just enough parafin to hold things together. They were just the right size for starting fires.

I start a wood fire every morning in our one outbuilding during the cold weather. I make firestarters from old shavings and cardboard egg cartons. I have found that the shavings work better and the starter burns longer if they are allowed to dry and are crushed up fairly fine, but not so fine as dust.

We melt the wax in a double boiler on the stove. While it is melting I crush as many shavings into the egg carton as possible. We soak the whole affair with the hot wax, and once it is all dry, it is simply a matter of breaking off one at a time as needed.

Of course, I have lots more shavings than I can use in this manner, but they go to the mulch pile.
