>One of life's PITAS is suffering the enthusiasm of someone who has just discovered something you knew about all along. I just discovered a 2003 book that I find fascinating to peruse and full of ideas to help those of us wih no "imagination" get our bowls out of the box. I know that WC & WOW and the literature already offer more ideas than we can absorb, but in my enthusiasm, I recommend that you look at this book. It concerns ceramics, but just transpose things wood for things pottery in John Britt's fine introduction and full page color pictures.

"500 "BOWLS Contemporary explorations of a Timeless Design" 416 pages Published by Lark Books division of Sterling Publishing Co., inc. N.Y. 24.95 at Barnes & Noble; less elsewhere?

I sure would appreciate your opinions, + or -. Arch

>Hi Arch,

I recently glanced through that book, then my wife went through it even more carefully and pointed out lots that I had overlooked. At first view, I didn't find it that pertinent--lots of things too wild and not easily extended to woodturning for my tastes. But a second guided look at many things raised my opinion of it. The price is certainly modest for its content and the content is very accessible. I certainly recommend other turners take a look through it, but don't necessarily encourage folks to purchase it sight unseen.

The new John Hunnex book on Woodturning Forms and Materials struck me in a somewhat similar fashion. I'm a fan of John Hunnex, but having his two earlier books, at first glance the photos looked familiar and offering little new learning. Taking the time to actually read the book and study the photos, greatly raised my appreciation for the book.

Some books are best to study at greater length, and, IMO both of these books reveal their value best when approached this way.

>Hi Arch,

The same publisher put out a call for entries from wood turners last year.

Hopefully they will have the 500 Wooden Bowls book out soon.

I have the Hunnex book Lyn mentioned and find it a good source for inspiration as well.

Thanks,

Gerry

>My wife is a potter and has the 500 bowls book on the coffee table. She was looking at it one day as I walked by and on the page was a set of what, at first glance, looked very much like a nested set of natural-edged wooden bowls. I have since looked at this book several times wondering "how could I do that on the lathe?" She has many pottery books that offer ideas and inspiration for woodturning. We look at forms and shapes at shows and galleries with a similar eye as to how we could produce a similar item or take some inspiration from them. As most people know, inspiration can come from anywhere. It helps to keep your eyes and minds open. I do hope they come out with a 500 Bowls in wood. That should be inspiring (if not a bit intimidating) to those of us who still have a lot to learn.

Happy and safe turning, Don
