>I'd like to tell you that I carefully masked off the natural area first, but I don't think I could get it to look right, so I just remounted the piece and turned the recess after topcoating the piece. I don't think you would necessarily have to dye first, but I wanted to gradiate from one color to the next.

I like those a lot. I think you could graduate the green piece to accentuate the dark area. Put some masking down and really have a strong line between the dark and light. It would look almost 3 dimnensional at that point. Nice job.

In the most recent Woodturning (British)mag, there is a similar piece, and that guy in the artile uses a latex masking fluid, said to be avialable in Art Supply Stores to mask the inside of his.
