A bowl and a vase, Pics

Mike Rubes, Apex, NC

>Hi all,

I've finally been able to get some time back on the lathe after "flat projects" monopolized my time for a while. Here's a pair of small items that I've recently turned.

First is a small vase of spalted birch that Dominic Greco sent my way about a year ago. It was a nice sized piece of wood, but unfortunately, I ended up with two small sections instead of one larger one. This vase is about 3.5 inches tall and 1.5 inches across. Finish is Tried and True varnish and then Beall buffed.

Second is a small piece of Amboyna Burl I got from Gilmer Hardwoods in Portland, OR. This stuff was fabulous to turn and I cannot wait to get some more. While it was a fairly expensive wood, it was very nice to turn and took a finish that was amazing. You cannot really tell from the pic, but the finish is as close as I've ever come to a "wet" finish. Same as above, this was T&T and Beall buffed. This is about 4 inches across and 1.5 high.

Comments and critiques are always welcome. Thanks for taking a look, these are not the best photographs, unfortunately.

Thanks,

Mike

Looking good Mike!

Dominic Greco in Richboro PA

>Mike,

Both look very cool. I really like the rim detail on the vase (Nice touch that). And you've done a great job on showing off the spalt lines well. BTW, I gave you a hunk of spalted "Beech". But I think everyone get the idea! :>)

The burned rings on the bowl add a nice touch. While they do a good job on adding detail to the rim, the next time I would suggest using a thinner guitar string and placing them closer together. Not to sound like an art critic (Heaven forbid!) I found this gives them a more "harmonious feel". Like the two burned lines are part of the same detail, and not 2 separate details.

Very Nice

>Hi Mike,

I like them both a lot. Both of them have sturdy forms that really appeal to my eye. I like the detail bead you put on the shoulder of the spalted vase....and the burned rings on the burl add a nice touch. Nice to see somebody is back to turning....I really need to get back at it. I miss my lathe a ton!

Glad I stopped in to take a peek tonight.

>Very nice work, Mike. Like you, I love working Amboyna burl but I tend to use it sparingly in inlays now because of the cost.
