I took mine apart a few years ago to regrease the bearings. More accurately, I should say my neighbor the machinist took it apart for me, but he made a spanner which he then gave to me for future operations. If you can find or make a tool that fits into those two holes, a few raps with a mallet is all it takes to get it apart.

I've considered it, but $100 seems steep. Is it worth it? (Consider I'm new to turning. Having fun but have no intention of making this a profession)

>You are right, $100 is a little too much for a center that has loose bearings. If I had it to do again I would buy the Axminster multi point, which is about $60. I have the Vicmarc cup center that came with my lathe, but I like the cone centers for some of the spindle work I do. Both the Axminster and Vicmarc have steel cones where the Oneway is aluminum, I have already bought one new cone and had the other turned where I got too close. You can get either the Vic or the Axminster cone centers for around $35 or less.

But, I do like the threaded end on the Oneway and the ability to make my own ends from wood and screw them on. Also, the large reversable cone is nice - it seems I used it once on something.......

My understanding is that the Oneway live center is designed to have some radial play when it is unloaded. Once the center is loaded the play is eliminated.

I have heard that if the bearing were the type which didn't exibit any play that the live center would cost a LOT more.

The bottom line is other centers don't exhibit this problem (more or less). Maybe some shims would work. As far as a special tool, check out a bicycle shop. I believe the name of the tool is an "adjustable bottom bracket spanner". Made to adjust the "axle" on a bike. Just bring the live center in and find the one that fits. I have one and I'll try it tonight to see if it works. Take it easy, Guy
