*OT* computer ?

W.C. Turner

>Since yesterday, there has been a small globe object, sitting on the lower arrow, where you scroll down on the page. When I place my mouse on it, it says, double click to open. When opened, it slides out to the left on the page, & says No Alert, & to the right of that appears a lil trashcan, & says Ad Trashcan. With the mouse over the globe, after it's open, it says double click to close. When I right click on it it says, Hide the Alert Tracker. One third of the globe object is blue on the lower left side. The other 2/3rds is green, with a black checkerboard pattern on the right side.

1) Does anybody know what this is?

2) Could it have something to do with my Norton AntiVirus?

3) How do I get rid of it?

4) Where did it come from?

Thanks,

W.C.

>WC,

Go to http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/docid/2002070914432936?OpenDocument&src=hot∏=Norton%20Internet%20Security&ver=2003%20for%20Windows%202000/Me/98/XP&stg=2&base=http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/nis/&next=nis_2003_search_solve.html&sone=nis_2003_tasks.html&tpre=

on the Norton website, there you can link to find out how to disable the firewall function if you care to.

Hi George..

>So, it is connected to the firewall? I need the firewall protection, so, I don't want to dis-connect it, plus I had to buy it.

Do you know why this would appear on the screen suddenly, yesterday. I've had it about 7 months, & it's never appeared before this.

Thanks,

W.C.

>Absolutely do not disable your firewall nor the AV functions. What you are seeing is the "Alert Tracker". It really has no function other than to let you see what has happened when Norton blocks something bad. To get rid of it you only need to right click on the Alert Tracker icon or on the NIS icon (green globe in the task bar) then select hide AlertTracker. It doesn't need to show on your desktop to continue logging alerts. As to why it just showed up - who knows. Some setting you changed in NIS or NAV or did you just install? The Show Alert Tracker option is the default on installation.

>Thanks. I finally figured it out last night. No, I don't want to disable the firewall, as I mentioned to George. I was just puzzled as to why it showed up all of a sudden, out of nowhere. I only hear from the firewall, when I get the little blinking icon in the tray, showing a trojan horse has tried to come in thru the backdoor. And, no, it's been installed for about 7 months. I didn't change anything, at least to my knowledge, SWMBO or Grand Daughter could have, accidently maybe.

BTW, what is AV functions? Thanks,

W.C.

"AV" = "Antivirus"
