SuperNova Insert...

>I just got a SuperNova chuck and I got the insert for my lathe. The question I have is that when I screw the insert in, I expect that it would go deep enough that the set-screw would be in the flat area behind the threads. When I look through the set-screw hole, I see a thread right in the middleof teh opening. Is this right, or am I missing something?

>I think the set screw you are talking about is the one on the chuck and it's purpose is to lock the insert to the chuck and yes it will be on a thread. If you remove the screw it should have a brass point to avoid thread damage.

>Not unless they have changed it. The set screw isn't brass ended. You should however, find a small round red piece of rubber type material which should go into the hole first, then put the setscrew in on top of it. The rubber is to protect the threads and better the slippage problem.
This info should have been in the instructions, where did you purchase the chuck?

I made 2 assumptions, the first about the flat space behind the threads, the second that the insert would screw all the way in and both wrong. The instructions say to insert a fiber washer to protect the threads. I just didn't read far enough...

If faced with that in future, what John said works well also, or you can cut a 1/16" thick wafer off the end of a brass rod with a diameter slightly smaller than the hole and drop that in first. The brass actually works better as the washer you have now will need to be replaced if you ever remove it for any reason.

>I suggest you spend a couple bucks and purchase a wrench for removing the chuck. I had a running problem with the insert coming out of the chuck rather than the chuck coming off the spindle.
