Scraper Bevel Angle?

Scraper Bevel Angle?

George Van

>What angle do you grind your scrapers?

Raffan's appear to be 60-70 degrees. Mine came with about 85 degrees which I continue to use. It seems like the bur doesn't last long at the steep angle and I was considering changing.

Thanks, George

I haven't measure but mine are probably closer to 75 or 80.

>As a visually oriented newbie... would a 90 degree angle be basically a straight up and down bar at the end? So 80 deg is darn near vertical, where 60 deg has a "pointier" tip?

And on that note, does anyone have a good book/reference recommendation for WHY that is? I can't get my mind wrapped around why one angle would be more aggressive than another angle, though I have no doubt that it's true. (And why is the sky blue? :)

>You are correct Dave, 80 is nearly a vertical bevel. I do not know why one is better than the other. Maybe a longer bevel produces a larger bur?
