Gold leaf the lip that the lig sits on. That would make all that is not seen gold.

Put a small dot of ebony on the underside of the lid to show some conection of the finial with the inside. The finial doesn't need to go through for the effect to work.

I usualy call this a lidded bowl. I think of boxes turned on the lathe to be end grain turnings.

As I said very nice.

I think the finial looks fine. But I woulod also likely say that a larger or smaller finial would look fine. I haven't worked out in my own mind what size, shape, texture or whatever a finial should be. I made one on it's side once and I liked the effect a lot. No one else seamed to like it though. I am still not sure that a "knob" needs to be centered and pointing up for it to have a positive on the viewer of the turning.

I like the finial. I often see them too big for my taste. I like the gold leaf. I too think there should be some sort of detail on the underside of the lid just for that little surprise for the customer. I usually put a little raised bead detail but sometimes use the bottom of the finial as a detail as well. Good shape on the box.
