I just use paste wax on the inside. I do the final sanding with the wax and 400 grit paper. I learned that from Chris Stott and it seems to work well for me. I also do the inside of the lid the same way. I use my standard lacquer finish on the outside.

>Generally not a good idea, since the smell of most finishes may linger inside the box. I always leave mine unfinished inside in case people want to store herbs or other edible goods in them.

I had that thought, that it will smell for a long while, but in the other hand, the inside could get dirty, so I did ask.

I will try the sanding sealer and shellac, that works well in the inside of drawers and boxes are a similar case.

I use Deft clear Brushable lacquer thinned with equal amounts of lacquer thinner. Apply with a Bounty paper towel. rubb it until it won't spin off and then turn the lathe on and buff it with another paper towel. If I get streaks I add just one drop of finish to a clean spot on the towel and rub the bad area while the lathe is on. this works kind of like french polishing and cleans up the bad areas.

Lately I've been using the Beal Buffing system to finish my boxes but these are mostly boxes for friends and time isn't a factor.

>I use a mix (emulsion actually) of tung oil and shellac applied on the lathe much as John L Described for his Deft lacquer finish. Again as John suggested, the shellac/oil mix essentially replicates the action of a French polish. Multiple coats work well. The oil enhances grain figure and the shellac seals the grain. The oil does have a residual odor (one that I think is fresh and nutty but my wife thinks is musty) but that will go away with time. Alternatively, I will use neat shellac or Deft much as John described. A year or so ago, I used Danish oil (Watco) under carnuba wax.
