There are numerous wood and tool suppliers in and around PittsburgH and Youngstown. Many Woodcraft stores and also a store a few miles north of PittsburgH called Woodcrafters, which carries Delta, numerous portable power tool brands and lots of wood. A fovorite wood supplier for me when I lived in PittsburgH was Sutherland Hardwoods, southwest of the city near Byrgettstown Pa, not far from the Ohio line. Woodcrafters can be found on line, below is a link to Sutherland. Oh yeah, check online for Turner's Anonymous, that's the PittsburgH chapter of the AAW. Hope this helps

Been working since I was 16. I'm 55 but have only been on this job 15 years and you can't afford to retire from this place until you have 30 years in. I'll have to be a young 68 when I retire. That's about the average age of a professional wood turner I think.

>I and my wife have been is SW Oregon since '89. We love it and look at So. CA as a bad memory. I was 57 when we came up and can confirm that we both shed at least 15 years of aging after leaving the rat race.

My reasoning for SW OR is:

1. Unlimited supply of myrtle, madrone, and oak.

2. No sales tax.

3. Considerably slower pace.

4. No drive-by shootings.

5. Most attempts to bring any gang activity in is strongly discouraged.

6. Getting a permit to carry a concealed firearm is encouraged.

7. The air is sweet and clean.

8. The sky is so blue it almost makes your eyes ache. I call it "achey blue".

9. It is so quiet up on our 11 acres up in the mountain at 1500 feet that one can always hear the airliners flying by at 35 or so thou feet.

10. The people are super nice.

11. The populace is proud to be American and is not afraid to say so.

12. People with a wrong-headed agenda don't seem to stay up here too long.

13. We are having so much fun that it sometimes is tough going to bed since there is so much we'd like to be doing.

Okay, that ain't the end of it, but I figure that living any place east of the Rockies is a tough call. The farther east you go the longer "they've" been at it. You know, reworking our "living" Constitution.

I won't even go into air polution, crime, having to be careful and politically correct to the extreme, mosquitoes, hot and humid summers, snow, rain, floods, and so forth.

BTW, I was born in WI, left at 17 to join the USN, got a NROTC scholarship and went to the U of MO (class of '54). I suggest I know of what I speak.

>Jim, I too retired from So CA but came to the lake area around Branson Mo. I will never regret the decision and thats been 14 years ago. Wood is plentiful and very reasonable. I have drifted over to lathe work, mostly segmented pieces.
