Figured wood for goblets

>Since goblets are so peculiar (end grain, both wide and thin) what figured woods lend themselves to this medium of goblets?
Have people had any luck with quilted, birdseye, spalted, curly? Would they be better if glued up?

>spalted wood most likely would be too weak for the stem unless you caught the spalting in its very early stages. I don't know about the rest of your questions.

I've turned a number of goblets from moderately spalted white birch (not all that strong a wood even unspalted) with fairly good success. I find it helps to support the stem from behind with a couple fingers. I, of course, work progressively down from the bowl (outside shaped and inside hololowed while I still had a lot of wood for support) to the base a couple inches at a time, sanding to final grit as I go.
