>I wanted a second chuck and came across this one on Ebay. I had it about 3 weeks and while it's not as pretty as my supernova it's definitely rugged. I've been using this chuck mainly for roughing out the inside of bowls and don't have a complaint yet.

>What brand of chuck do you currently own? I know of a single Nova scroll chuck for sale dirt cheap. It's unusual in the fact that it's a blank back and not drilled or tapped.
If you have the ability to drill and tap a hole accurately in metal then it may be a deal for you.

>Well, I won't shoot you. I used a similar looking cheap chuck for at least a couple of years with my first lathe and it worked just fine. I did knock a few pieces out of true with a bad catch but never lost anything. I am well aware of very different opinions from others about these chucks.
When I got my General I bought a Oneway Stronghold. There is no comparison but there is also no comparison to the size of hole in my wallet either.

Personally, I had a Grizzley chuck that came with a used Grizzley lathe I purchased last year (strictly for spindle turning). I used the chuck ONCE and literally threw it out. It was so bad that I didn't want it to pollute the chuck gene-pool.

I stopped it and found one of the 4 holders was loose. I took it off the lathe, took it apart and was apalled at the poor workmanship, poor cast iron it was made from and the circular area that tracks the 4 holders. The iron had disintegrated into sort of a powder. Now that is cheap.
I hate to think what might have happened if it had blown while turning at high speed. I do know that God was watching over me that day. And yes I thank Him every now and then for allowing me more days of turning without injury.
I've got some Packard chucks for light work and they work fine. But I draw the line on going cheap on chucks. In only one's life on the line in this particular venue!
