Can a kelton centre saver work on Jet 1442?

>Does anyone have experience using a Kel McNaughton standard centre saver system on a Jet 1442 lathe. Neither Jet nor Kelton customer service had answers. My concern is twofold: (1) the Jet lathe motor is only 1 HP, and (2) the banjo tool rest hole is only 2 1/2 deep. Thanks for any advice you can give.

>Dick,

Hey there. I own the Jet 1442 and Standard Kelton center saver. In a word, yes! It can work. Two things: Setup is everything. Secondly, have to take it slow and steady. To see a picture I took.....try this post I did on woodworking forums:

If I can be of further help, email me and I will try my best.

Sincerely,

William

>Dick,

The next question will be: what set or sets should you purchase? For this size of lathe, the standard Kelton set and/or the mini set are great. The knives that come with the mini will do a lot for you, but they won't go as deep as the standards. If you plan to make bowl blanks for an average set of bowls, go for the standard. You can always buy the other blades when you need them.
