Sounds like a great deal with the extra's the chuck probaly cost a $100 on it's own.

I'm in Topeka (or as a friend calls it To-puka!). The local turners club has two suitcases of videos that can be checked out. Also a former shop teacher has told me I could come over for a lesson whenever we can coordinate schedules.

With being so close if you want I'll get you some of the sycamore I have. Don't know if it is common or not, but it has a pink hue to it as well as spalting in parts. The pink may have something to do with the fact that the pith had rotted out, but it's different from what I've normally seen. Whenever I go take my grandfather out we have to cut wood, I'm trying to only bring back interesting stuff.

>Ernie usually hangs out at the Hand Tool Forum. He is a great guy and does a little turning. Odd you should offer sycamore, I got some from him when I paid a visit a couple years ago. I was always told that the state tree of Kansas is the telephone pole.

I turn on an old blue Jet 1236. The first thing you want to do is check the sliding pulley on the motor shaft for lubrication. The shaft needs to be lubricated often for proper operation. Jet recommends spraying it with silicone lube to keep it free. If you move the speed lever and the speed doesn't change then pulley is probably stuck. I have managed to break two tail stocks. One side of the stock lathe rest was snapped off through operator error. I was trying to make a coaster out of a piece of dry ash lumber with a spindle gouge. That is a story in its self. Suffice it to say that I op checked my adrenal gland when I got a big catch and the lathe rest snapped.

I found out the hard way what a drive extension can be used for. I had roughed out a blank for a natural edged bowl from a maple stump that came from my brother-in-laws yard. This was to be a present for them. The bowl could have been gorgeous, with 4 peaks around the edge. Unfortunately, the spindle and drive on my lathe were not long enough to reach to the center of these four high spots! I ended up cutting the top of the blank flat and turning a conventional bowl. If I had owned a drive extender, I could have finished the bowl as intended.

As for the telephone pole being the state tree, that's western Kansas and eastern Colorado. Out there they pile up rocks in a wire basket for fence posts! Over here in the east we do okay. Of course according to my grandfather "trees are for burning!"

Mark, remember where Kansas is? :) I would love to come to the picnic, but it's just a little far for me to go in my Jeep right now. Now, if I was able to afford a Twin Comanche now it would only be about 4 1/2- 5 hours. That would be a different story. I have been to central and western PA, pretty country that way! Maybe next year!
