New to turning.

>I have been lurking around this turning forum for quite a while. While I have never done any wood turning I really enjoyed the pictures of projects members have turned. Since I have never been around a lathe in my life it just makes sense for me to go out and buy one (haha).I bought a used Midi with 8 chisels and a mandrel and bushings. I also got a book and a trimmer. I don't know the difference a bowl gouge and a spindle gouge. Thats my question, whats the difference between them and what is a spindlemaster? The difference in a bowl gouge and spindle gouge is the shape. A bowl gouge is usually U or V shaped with the flute being fairly deep.

A spindle gouge is usually a fairly open curve more like cutting the bottom 1/4th off of a O.

The spindle master doesn't have a flute at all and is flat on top. It is a tool that is supposed to me easier to use than a spindle gouge but I'm not sure. I found it worked about the same.

I start between centers to shape the outside of the piece and the tennon. This method provides an exact bottom center for later use.
