fun at the lathe

John Lucas

>Tonight was one of those days that tells me why I turn. I had music on. The shop was comfortable. A freshly sharpened tool was throwing little curls off the maple blank. It didn't really matter what I was turning just the process of moving your body with the tool and the music and the smell of wood man that's what it's all about.

>Just in fun, John:

..and there are those nights that make me appreciate nights like yours.

Radio buzzing with the lathe running, sweating and swatting skeeters on a not so rare night in June, (then,if ever, come imperfect days)

turning stinky scrub oak, dropping a skew on my toe, the form on the lathe not resembling the form in my mind, the overpowering smell of Deft, spilled thinner, the plaintive call of SWMBO, have to get up early tomorrow morning, electricity went out again for another 10 minutes, oak log waited 7 months just so it could crack tonite. Am I having fun yet? Finally decided to give up and try again on a better nite. Turned off the lathe and turned on the computer. You guessed it, sure enough the first post on WC was from a miserable gritcher who signed himself.... Arch

>Leave the can of Deft open and close, and every night will be like John's.

>Damn, I knew that deft was good for something. That and sniffing really large magic markers.
