Aspen burl!

>O.K., I'll admit, this is primarily a gloat.

I just returned from Crested Butte, Colorado, and a good friend, who drove out, is hauling back 7 pieces of Aspen burl for me. This wood is a few years old and some of it has some noticeable cracks, primarily in the straight grained sections, but I couldn't turn it down. The price was right. I just have to turn a bowl for the former owner. He was glad to not have to shuffle it around anymore in his woodpile to keep from having to split it.

Do any of you Western turners have experience with Aspen burl? Any tips or warnings would be appreciated. I haven't cut into any of it yet, but I anticipate some beautiful wood.

I have had a little exp. but not alot.

The only problem I had was some of the grain may be radial. The best term I can use. When you mount from the outside of the burl you may find the inner growth will release and pop out as you turn. What I worked with was almost layered.

I what you have is a true burl this may not be the case. Just be carefull

Sounds like you were dealing with some ring shake, where the wood separates along the rings. My understanding is that this is caused by bacterial infection which weakens the wood.

I can't wait for the Aspen to get home from its' journey (maybe Friday or Saturday) so I can see what I have.
