Just wanted to say that my computer was present on the chat last night but I could not be physically present so I finished reading the chat buffer at midnight...

It was very interesting I have to say...

John, my grinder setup now is a bit different from the setup shown on my web page. I bought an 8" 3600rpm to replace the 6" 1800rpm model I had so now I have two 8" grinders, a slow and high speed. The high speed presently has a 60 grit grey stone for my mower blades and a green HSS/Carbide 120 grit stone. The slow speed is the Woodcraft deal I got 2 years ago now. It carries a 60 and 120 grit white wheels. I made just about all the rests I am using including the jigs, the exception is the Veritas rest I bought from Lee Valley. I intend to take new pictures as soon as the Coolpix 5700 comes back from the repair shop curing the infamous and often seen flash problem. I wonder if this is looked after on the replacing model, the Coolpix 8700...

Russ, I was turning last night and decided to touch all my gouges to the grinder and I passed the snoot test till I hit the stone with the diamond razor like wheel dresser, Geeee! Does that ever bring a nasty cloud of unbreathable dust/binder/Al oxyde...

Mark, I stay in the shop also not to make my sugar level go up, I even come in to have a bite ounce in a while not to make it too low...

I wondered why you were so quiet. I now have almost the same setup. My old grinder has a gray wheel and a green wheel. My new one currently has 2 100 grit white wheels but I'm going to change onewheel to a 60. It's nice having 2 of the same wheels because I have one jig set for scrapers and one for gouges. I find the 100 grit way too slow for shaping new edges so I'm going to change to a 60 for that.

Grinders

TD �a good grinder is worth the extra cost.

Russ: good grinding wheels are a cheaper solution {than balancers]

TD the problem with grinders is not so much the out of balance wheel as it is the wheel not running 90� to the shaft

Machined washers on Delta better than stamped ones. you can rotate the stamped washers around to find the best spot

Mark Kauder & TD peach/pink wheels are disappointing, load up.

TD likes blue wheels, $29 from General Industrial, made in Israel, brand CW?

Russ: 80 grit white wheel made by Niagra very good

TD 80 grit for gouges, 60 for scrapers; Dave Peeples: 46 and 80; Russ: 80 for everything but 1200 grit on a plate for skews. JMichel uses a belt sander

Mark Kauder: speed of periphery of wheel is same for 6� at 3450 and 8� at 1750

Dave Peeples: uses diamond dresser 1 3/4�wide from Woodcraft

Bushings: correct wheel wobble before dressing. To make own bushings,suggested oak or maple, possibly turned on the grinder for accuracy.

Discussion of dust problems and sparks. Fire hazard using dust collector for grinder?

I live in Israel and I cannot get up that early in the am to participate. At least with your set up I can at least see what went on.
