>Take your tool with the longest handle and make sure you can swing it through it's fullest arc.

Say for example, you want to work under a rim, the tool might be need to be in a position almost straight out from you.

>plus ballast and an on-board tool rack. Worked well in my shop where (as you can see in the pic) most everything has to be mobile. Lathe was actually bolted to the base and the 200+ lbs of sand (in box) and block, cut down on my "Dances With Lathe" routine.

My preference would be to mount something like this so it swung around to my side of the lathe at the tailstock end. I think that would be handier and, more importantly, safer. Just a thought.

The rack was set up to be out of the way for bowl-work and above the level of the lathe's max swing even on spindles BUT

It also swung about 270* to 90* to the bed so that if you were doing spindle work, the rack was in arm's reach of your right hand.
