man i hate when that happens

Scott Stefanoski in Buggy Baltimore

>after the weekend from @#!@^%#@ where everything i touched seemed to break or not work correctly i decided to sneak into the shop and try to turn some lightly spalted maple i cut this weeked. figuring the therapy would do me some good, i loaded an 8" bowl blank onto my lathe with a face plate, found my dust mask, face shield on, set the tool rest appropriately and grabbed a gouge. As i powered on the lathe, it started wobbling out of control, since it was my first time turning a piece of this size that was fairly out of balance, i stood back and waited a second to make sure nothing would come flying at me. All of a sudden i heard a series of loud banging and see the motor banging wildly against the frame of the lathe. I shut the lathe off and see that the cast iron motor mount seems to have cracked/broken.

my question is can i get it welded, or should i just order a new motor mount? it is for a jet 1236 that is a few years old.

>Bummer Scott! While I don't have the answer to your question you're welcome to turn on my lathe until yours is fixed. I bet you'd enjoy seeing the vacuum chuck in action, too.

Just give me a ring.

>Scott,

I'm sorry to hear about this. I would imagine you could have it welded, but I don't know much about welding or weld strength. I'm sure someone with more knowledge regarding this will answer. If welding is not an option, here's their website. Again, sorry to hear about this.

A good welder can probably do the job. I hate it when that happens.

>Hi Scott

I broke the very same part on my Jet 1236 many moons ago. In fact, I broke enough parts on it that the technician with whom I spoke at one point remarked that I was finding all the possible defects in the lathe. I did use it very heavily.

I would (and did) just order a new part. I discovered that it had most likely broken because I did not have the head tightened down properly after swivelling it. I cannot say if that is the case with you. It has been my experience that welding cast iron, while possible, is diffucult and does not produce good results very often. Good luck with it.

>Scott,

Just a weekend like that,I've had weeks, and months like that. Yes cast iron can be brazed, or welded with nickel. I have done both on machinery and have had good luck with both, even on heavy machinery. I would check the cost of a new part against a welding estimate though to avoid any unhappy surprises. Also the nickel weld would be much stronger than the brazing. Good luck.

>I agree with Roger that you can have it welded successfully with the nickel rod and welding is stronger than brazing. And I also agree that you should look at replacement cost vs. welding. Look for a small welding shop where they appreciate a small job, or an Ag equipment dealer with a repair shop.
