Another PM3520A Question

>I have been having trouble turning a spindle on the lathe because of the less than advertised distance between the centers. Would somebody who has the 17" extension measure between centers with the tailstock at the end of the extension? I need to turn a piece and need to know if it will fit if I buy an extension. And no, I don't have enough room for the long extension.

52 1/4" between the tailstock taper and the headstock taper. 47 1/2" between the drive center and tailstock that came with the lathe. If you bought one of the Delta short tailstocks you could probably get 48 to 49". I got my extension from the Toolnut for $175.
You could probably slide the tailstock back a few inches if you were careful to align it. It will easily lock in that position but the alingment flange is on the inboard and outboard side so the outboard alignment flange won't be between the ways.

>John, thank you for responding so quickly. At present, I had the tailstock extending beyond the bed and it does lock just fine, but you do have to align it manually.

If you only need to extend it a few inches make a wooden extension. This would primarily be to keep the tailstock in line. The lock would still be on the cast part. You could use the scew holes for the extension. What did find out when I got the extension is that it only fits on one end. Apparently the other end is drilled for the full extension.
