Help decide - collar or finial (PICs)

Mike Schwing from Maryland

>Maple burl hollow form. Ebony collar and finial. I can't decide! Amazing how much different they make the same form look, isn't it?

Or go with the collar, turn the bottom of the finial to fit INSIDE the collar and have an either/or piece ;-)

The form looks great, my vote is for the collar, but it looks a little tall.

>Personally, I like the collar, but the finial would look much better if it were smaller. I would say reduce the size of it by half, and look at it again. Better yet, turn another and compare the two. On a vessel of this size, it just seems too tall and massive to me. I often find that proportion is much tougher to achieve than shape.

Now, where do you keep getting so much pretty wood?

>Thank you everybody. I knew folks were going to think the finial was too massive, but honestly, while it does in the pics, it does not in 3D. The collar, I agree, it is a bit tall for the piece. That was the third finial I turned, each a bit smaller, because, as Doug says, proportion is the toughie.

Instead of wasting ebony while coming up with the proper proportioned rim treatment, I turned walnut, colored it with a black Sharpie, and sprayed it with lacquer. Not quite as sharp as a ebony but acceptable.

Doug, my bride calls me a "wood whore". I spend a LOT of time looking for special pieces of wood. I told you I'd bring you a bunch of cherry burls when I vist you and I just got a fresh truckload of them yesterday. I have befriended a sawmill with the gift of a cherry burl bowl like the one you were helping me with.

This particular piece of wood I got on ebay. Got lucky, $10 + $10 shipping for enough of this for 3 forms. There was no indication that it had this marble spalting until I started turning it. Won a 18" maple burl cap yesterday for $20. I'll pay for stuff I can't harvest locally.

Finial...

Re: Finial...

>Thanks Peter, and everyone. Keith T. probably imparted the most important thing to note, on another forum - the finial is too plain for the form. Since I (was) mostly a bowl turner I had no skew experience, and I'm only half good with a detail gouge. Add no small tools to that and you have a guy who really doens't have the ability (yet) to turn a good finial. Keith was as right as rain - the finial should be a little "fancier" to match the form and the burl figure. I knew it, I just couldn't get there.
