Kinda OT - natural edge box

>Perhaps the same for natural edge bowls may apply here.....

I'm making a naturale edge cherry shadow box for my dad for Fathers Day. I have some nice cherry boards with the bark on the edges and am going to try to match up 4 pcs so that they're all about 5"x1/2" thick.

My question is...I plan to use my planer to mill the boards down to thickness and wonder what if anything I should put on the bark to keep it from pulling away?? Is there anything or am I just gonna have to take my chances. I hesitate to CA glue them and then run that through my planer....

Any advice is greatly apprecitaed...hopefully I'll be able to post something nice.

TIA

Kurt

>If the bark encounters those planer knives there's not a glue in the world that's going to help. Either ensure that the bark is beneath the plane of the surface that you want to plane or better yet, hand plane.

>I would not run it through the planer. Well actually it is possible I think but you are taking a chance. Use a router to lower the bark a little below the final dimension and then run the rest of the board through the planer. It's just might work.

You still have a problem with jointing the first side. You would have to build a router planning support. You can find those in any of the better router books. I would use the router to flatten one side and lower the bark on that side. Then run this over the jointer. Then use the router planner to relieve the bark on the other side and then run this through the planner.

Handplaning if of course the best option.
