>I picked up this tredal lathe last week. some one hooked it up to a moter and I want to put it back as a treddal. and now I'm wondering what speeds I need to make it run at? If I have some idea at what is the highest speed I should shoot for I can figure out what size pully to put at the bottom. it is only an 8X24 lathe and I will probably only use it for chisel handles and the such maybe a pen or two if I can get a mandril to fit it. How about giving me some ideas on what to do?

It sorta looks like my 1900 Craftsman Companion without the base. Mine is designed to be used in a seated position. I went out to the barn and measured the sheaves (pulleys). The headstock has a dual sheave, 2-1/2" and 3". The flywheel measures 13" and 13-3/4" with the treadle rod connected to the flywheel 3" out from the center of the flywheel. The flywheel and headstock sheave are designed to use a 5/16" round leather belt. I get my belts at a local sewing machine repair center.

I personally would like a little more speed, but the torque would go down, so it's probably not a good idea. I also would prefer a treadle that didn't hinge through 45�, maybe 30� at the most.

You could probably put your lathe on an old treadle sewing machine base and make it work fine.

>I believe I would make the largest drive pully that will fit into your frame under it. I don't believe you can spin it too fast with foot power. All the pictures that I've seen, as well as seen used both in person and on TV, have has a pretty large drive pully and a pully on the shaft that was only slightly larger than the shaft itself. Sometimes, they don't even have a pulley on the shaft, only a groove for the cord.
