Tear out from Sorby texturing tool

>I recently turned a small bowl from a piece of elm. I added a textured area to the outside using the sorby texturing tool. The texturing was done with the tool at about a 45 degree angle. When I applied the tung oil finish it caused the textured area to get some dark blotches. I'm assuming this is due to the scraping rather than cutting nature of the tool. Is there any way to avoid this problem (sanding sealer, different tool approach)? The elm piece will get the textured area painted gold with black highlights to hide the blotches but I want to avoid this problem in the future. Thanks.
