I agree with Mark. I have a Jet Mini and really love it. I've turned stuff up to around 9.5" on it. It can be trying to spin stuff that big, but it can be done with it :)
If you can find out exactly what the "starter kit" has in it, you can better evaluate whether it will be useful to you. When I bought my Mini, it came with a pen turner's starter kit that was actually pretty useful. Even if you didn't plan to do pens, it came with some glue and hut wax and a skew and spindle gouge. While not the best quality tools, they worked and got me started.
Good luck, but be carefull, this is a very, very slippery slope!!!
