>I'd like to send along some pics of the antique lathe I work on. It was made in 1860's in Fitchburg Mass.

I use it as my numero uno.

I have pictures at the link below.

Comments welcome.

A few questions

Jeff Gerardot, Indianapolis IN

>Very cool lathe, Joaz.

It looks like those are updated bearings on it. Did you put those on? If so, what kind of problems did you run into in mounting them?

I see you've got a modern chuck. Did you have to machine the spindle to make it a standard size & thread pitch, or was it already a fit?

On the banjo, does that riser post slide on those 2 banjo rails, or do you just slide the whole banjo assembly towards the center for interior work?

I'm curious because I have a vintage metal lathe that I use for woodturning as well.

Thanks for posting the link.

>Hi Jeff, The old babbit bearing were showing a lot of end play so I had a machinist put the pillow blocks on for me. I still have to remember to oil the old babbits.

The spindle was cutom made for the lathe. The banjo was made to accept two different size tool rests. I installed a 2 horse farm grade motor with a reversing switch. I control the speed with a pedal and pulley affair that slips the belt. This is a wonderful; old lathe and I would not trade it for new. In fact, I have a Vega that can't compare to the "old Fitch" Good luck converting your machine.
