natural edge bottle stopper *LINK*

>I have been trying to figure out how to turn a natural edged bottle stopper. I have turned hundreds of conventional stoppers and know how to approach them but, how would I go about drilling the hole for the dowl? I don't want to leave any marks on the end where I would have to hold it in a chuck. Any suggestion or comments welcome. Thanks Joaz

>I've only done a few stoppers so I might be off track. I drill a 3/8" hole and then use a pin chuck. If this is an option couldn't you use stiff styrofoam to hold it steady and drill a hole on a drillpress. I think the foam would have enough give to form a solid base for drilling.

I use a pin chuck also. You could cut the blank square and hold it in a vise to drill the hole. I hold all of mine in a vise for drilling after the drill grabbed one and bruised my fingers.

I use a hand screw to drill on the drill press. If you support the hand screw the drilling should go okay.
