>Hey all, I am getting ready to turn a 18" walnut log and I decided to go with a hollow form instead of coring for bowls. I have a boat load of bowl blanks drying. My question is how much does walnut move? Should I rough turn and dry or go from green to finish? This is the first time for walnut for me. Thanks, Sean

>I've found Walnut to be pretty stable especially if hollowing thru the end grain. For hollow vessels I turn green to final thickness then bag it a few days to dry. Watch out, green walnut will rust the ways FAST.

>Watch out for splitting along the growth rings. Walnut likes to separate like that. I had a beautiful blank that I started roughing this past weekend. As I was turning the tenon for the chuck, I heard a hollow sound. I stopped the lathe and the blank had separated long the growth ring that encompassed the entire tenon around to about half of the bowl blank. I relegated it to the waste pile.

>Yep, some walnut does like to ring check. Usually you can see where it will do it with the end smoothed up. I then use a faceplate size that the screws are outside that area. Not sure what causes the extra large pored growth rings.
