>I have a jet 1442. I found that I can push the speed lever beyond the slowest speed and it gets even slower. If you let go of it, the lever will move itself back to the 400rpm location. I found that a large rubber band made from an old innertube can put enough force on the lever to keep it in this "slower than 400rpm" position. Has anyone else tried this? Is there any reason not to do this? I would ask customer service but I would expect a don't do it response since it was not tested in the factory.

Let me know if anyone needs a picture and I will post one here.

>This has been a common mod for the 1236. The only problem is you will wear out the belt much faster, since its riding on the extreme outer diameter of the spindle sheeve. In fact, if you look at it with the cover off, you'll see only 1/2 the belt is in contact with the sheeve. By removing the lever from the headstock and repositioning it, you can make this new slow speed a regular position on the speed selector (at the expense of loosing the highest speed).

Can you give a little more detail on how to accomplish this modification? I would much rather have lower speeds than the high ones available with the factory set-up. Thanks, Brad

>Move the speed lever to the slowest speed. Lock it in place. Remove the two screws holding the lever to the headstock. Remove the lever from the headstock. Move the lever to the 2nd slowest speed and lock it in. Now re-install the lever back into the headstock and screw it in. Now you have the lathe set at the lowest factory speed, but the lever is on the 2nd lowest speed. Get it? Now you can move the lever to the lever's slowest speed, which will be lower than the factory's slowest speed.

You WILL chew up the belt after awhile (but who cares....they are inexpensive), so make sure you have an extra one on hand.
