Dismantling A Pen

Stuart Johnson

>I turned my first pen at the Freedom Pen event held at Curley Woods and thought I would give a few more a try. So far the only problem I've come up with has to do with the assembly or in this case dismantling. I have a pen with the wrong tip installed.

How does one go about taking them apart once assembled or am I out of luck on two different sets? The pens are twist style.

Also what is a good source for sets? I purchased these from Craft Supplies and don't have any problem with them. However, I do like to have choices. I don't think pens will take the place of the rest of my turning attempts but they are fun and a quick project using scraps.

>Can't help you on the dismantling part as I haven't had to do that on the few I've turned. But I did just receive my order from Penn State Industries (www.pennstateind.com). They have a good selection, quick delivery, and good prices.

Chuck.

>About the only way to dismantle the lower half is to use the pen disassembly tools sold by Woodcraft. You can check them out at www.woodcraft.com, look under their pen kits hotlink. For the top portion I've had good results inserting the shaft end of a drill bit into the barrell and, holding the top portion in my hand, striking the drill bit into a piece of scrap 2X to drive the cap out of the barrell. The same process may work for the bottom half using a bit that will just fit through the twist mechanism to remove the tip, but I haven't tried it yet, so I can't say for sure it will. However, this is the principle of the disassembly tools.

>Easy to do! I use a piece of 1/8" Brass welding rod. Insert through hole for refill. Hold lower half of barrel and tap rod. Tip will pop off. The top cap will pop off with a piece of 1/4" Brass rod. The same 1/4" will also salvage the mechanism from a ruined bottom. Just need to drill a 7mm hole in a block of wood, pop tip off, invert, use 1/4" rod and tap mechanism out.

I've "recovered" many from damaged pens... John

>I will also use what is called a shaft clamp that I purchased from a golf club makers supplier. It is nothing more than a stiff rubber block with a hole in the center and a slit on one side. I place the pen in this clamp and place the whole thing in a hobbiest vise. Then it is just a matter of tapping out the pen parts using my disassembly tools from Woodcraft and a small hammer.

Turn 'em round,
