Salad for 50?
Mark Mandell - Gone Round In Jersey
>Spalted Ambrosia Hard Maple - 20" x8" deep with 1" foot. Undercut rim is 1" and the bowl is turned to 1/2" thickness. Finish is Gloss Tung with the bugger's holes filled with black epoxy. Kid "named" it the Sunset Bowl. once you see the sun with 2 wispy clouds in front and the islands "floating" in the golden sea, you can't see much else.

Nice bowl! I like the form. Just curious, do you know about how much that blank weighed when you mounted it? If I remember correctly, you're spinning a Stubby, right? Did it even "break a sweat" spinning that big hunk of wood?
That's a great finish and photography as well. I like the idea of filling the holes with epoxy. It doesn't really jump out at you in the pics, but lets the grain of the wood do the talking!

Roughed this before I bolted the lathe to the floor (or maybe WHY I bolted the lathe to the floor!). The blank started out at about 28" and 140 lbs and was the reason I put in an electric winch on a roller track over my lathe. Even after I got it round (at about 24") it would still limit the rpm's due to different densities in the blank being able to get the 800lb lathe to "talk" to me about how speed kills. This was the "thinner" of the 2 halves of this log section; the other half rough turned to about 20" but almost 12" deep; haven't finish turned that one yet. Was able to get a nice 16" core out of this one as well.
Funny, great fun to turn stuff this size, but when it's finished there's this problem of "What the do I do with this now?" as there ain't a big market in my area for 5 gallon maple bowls. Put this in the middle of the dinning room table and the guests can sit elsewhere!

Great Bowl, great finish! This would look good if it was a small bowl. Having turned mostly spalted wood I too enjoy looking for the pictures in the grain.
