>Hello,
I have some sticky turnings that I put too much linseed oil on that didn't get wiped off in time. It seems to help to put more on and wipe it off with a clean rag but this doesn't seem to get it to dry as I would like. Is there a better approach?

>Assuming you have nothing else in the mix (like exotic woods) that's retarding the reaction, you've got 2 options: set it aside and let it "dry" naturally through the polymerization process (WITHOUT adding any more) or soak it in MS while scrubing off the finish with synthetic wool (essentially stripping off the finish). Straight blo can take a while to dry, depending on who made it, how much drier they added, and what you're applying it to. Assuming nothing strange in the wood requiring a barrier coat, suggest Watco or similar "danish" finishes which set up much faster.

>I use BLO as a "clear stain" on all my work--both flat and turned. When I was teaching, every year at least one student would forget to wipe the excess off and was left with a sticky mess. The only way that I found was to do as suggested in the previous post--use MS and synthetic steel wool and remove the finish. It's a chore!
