pen project

>I had about 10 members of two different turning clubs over to may place on Saturday. We wanted to teach people to turn pens for the pen project and share a little commraderie. We had a good time. I don't know how many pens were turned but everyone had fun. I highly encourage other turners to get together. Call up your fellow turners and visit a few. It's good fun. Here's a photo of a couple of pens I made from Red, White and Blue Corian.

I glued 2 colors together with medium CA. Then I would slice it to thickness on the table saw and glue the next color on. Then I would do the same. It dries almost instantly if the cuts are clean. I used an 80 tooth blade. You do need to wipe excess CA off the outside otherwise it dries very quickly and you have a pen stuck to your fingers (or so I hear, didn't do something that stupid).
I think this method would work for wood but you might have to wait a little longer for the glue to dry.
I drilled at a fairly slow speed and low feed rate. It was a little difficult lining things up because the person who cut the blanks used a bandsaw. I kept the flat edge next to the fence and just tried to center the ragged edges as best I could when glueing.
