>Yesterday, on the last day of a 3-day class, my Oneway lathe developed a rattle. All this time I was thinking that only a Nova lathe had problems with broken motor shafts. Not true.
Tomorrow I get to make a call to Oneway and test their reputation for excellent and fast service.

Belt Tensioning Lever?

>Russ, I had a rattle in mine that I traced to the belt tensioning lever that pulls out. I solved the problem by simply stuffing a piece of rubber between it and the sidewall and the lever so it wouldn't vibrate. Here's hoping this is all your rattle is.

Imagine my displeasure when I found that my new Oneway lathe rattled at particular speeds. Fairly large ranges of speeds. I read the manual and it said something about tension for the belt. When I tensioned the belt the rattle went away.
I like the idea of a lose belt, sometimes, because of the catch/slip nature of a lose belt. But that rattle drove me nuts. So instead of loosening the belt I just don't get catches any more (I call them aggressive cuts).
Your rattle may be something entirely different. Anyway here is the specific passage in the manual I was talking about:
"Lower the motor, and apply downward pressure (25-50 lbs). While still applying downward pressure, tighten the speed handle to lock the motor in place."

The shaft is broken clear through about 1/4" inside of the motor pulley. Only the key was holding it together.
