I started out doing that very thing and then mounted a hand drill on my workbench with a Lag screw tail center. It works but I don't know why Woodsmith keeps pushing the drill press lathe idea. They even had plans for a mini lathe in thier Workbench edition.

Good mini lathes are so cheap now I would push those instead of jury rigging on the drill press.
