One Way Chuck Question

>I had to take my One Way Stronghold chuck apart and it was very difficult. It just got too hard to operate. After I got the Keeper Ring off, I had a heck of a time getting the threaded adapter outta there. I finally had to screw it to the headstock of the lathe, get a hammer and beat against the body of the chuck with a piece of 1x2 pine.....demolished three of the boards so finally started hitting the chuck directly with some light blows and finally it came loose. I do not want to have to repeat this scenario ever again. Any suggestions as to what to do? Some kind of lube maybe in the taper? If so, what kind. Also the jaws are a little sluggish as they move in their grooves. I am afraid that any kind of lube will attract even more fine dust and make the chuck difficult to operate.....any suggestions would be appreciated.

The secret to removing the insert with the locking taper is to take the two screws which you removed from the rim of the insert and screw them into the other two holes in the rim so they may be used as jacking screws. Alternate between the two screws by applying a bit of torque on each one until the insert pops out. Do not apply any lubricant to the taper. A locking taper must be dry and clean to work properly. Otherwise, the only thing driving that 200 lb. chunk of wood is the two little screws we have been talking about.

As for the other problem, I've never had the need to lube the slides on any of my Oneway chucks, but if I did, I probably would use a spray lube which is made for chain drives used in dirty environments. It is formulated so as to not attract contaminants.

>Thanks, Al.....I never thought about using those other two threaded holes as a leveraging mechanism. By the way, I got some #0000 steel wool and polished up the rest of the parts and they are now working fine. Thanks for your input.
