Spindle Turning Question

>When you're starting a spindle type project where there will be some coves, etc. do you always, for example, use a parting tool to establish the depth of each cove, etc.? (I'm very new to turning but in a few months I'd like to take on making the 'spindle' for a tilt top tea table and wonder if it's automatic that you establish the depth of each profile first.) Tia,

It all depends on how fussy you are about getting exact measurements on matching pieces such as table legs. Two things I have noticed, or maybe three:
1) beginners have a hard time taking off enough wood and measuring helps
2) very few people actually stop literally at the parting depth. They tend to cut a touch deeper as they round over the bottom of the cove.
3) most eyes do not care if you are out a few hundredths here and there
Personally I measure some of the major coves and beads and just eye ball the rest. It sounds like you are contemplating a pedestal leg table so nothing needs to match up and most of the turning can be drawing in 3D as the piece turns.
