>When I shear scrap the outside of a bowl from smaller to larger, I end up with spirals thus the bowl is coming out of round. (It is very bumpy when I clean the edge using the area just above the nose of the tool). I hold the handle low at about 60�. The upper edge of my fingernail ground gouge is about 1/8� from the bowl while the lower edge scrapes. I have been trying this method to cut end grain smooth after using pulling cuts to shape the bowl.

Am I using too much pressure or?

Tried doing the finish cut from large to small? Let the leading tip do the "cutting" while the trailing portion of the side grind smooths. Also suggest you lighten up on the cut; sounds like your "gouging" out the softer portions of the grain.

>Also slow down on your cut. I finish cut slow and roll the gouge so as to make a shear cut with the handle very low.

Slowing down the feed of the gouge really helped, I must have been feeding too fast and creating a spiral.
