>I can't STAND to have unfinished projects, and these are killing me. The reason they're unfinished, and I guess this is a stealth gloat, is that the Oneway rotary adapter for my new vacuum chuck system hasn't arrived. I wanted to use it on these items, two of which are too big for my Cole Jaws and one irregular. Yeah, I could do it the old fashioned way, but...

The bottoms of these 4 items aren't done, the tenons are still on them and no underside detail has been added. Still, they're promising. Turned the big platter start to finish this afternoon. The others have been having finish coats added to them for a week or two.

One quilted maple platter, one burr walnut "cracked" plate inside a "cracked" bowl, one cherry burl (thanks to Doug Trembath for instruction and encouragement), and one little ash bowl.

Johnny Tolly set me up with the vac chuck system and he couldn't be nicer and easier to work with.

>yeah, yeah, yeah...as I said, I could do it the old fashioned way, as I have up to this point, but what fun is that when you can do it by spending more money? I'm just doing what the President said we should, pumping up the economy to help fight terrorism.

I go by the rule don't make anything unless it requires buying a new tool. One of the thing I like most about vacuum chucks is being able to save pieces. If you haven't made them too thin you can put them on the vacuum and go back and change the foot or reshape the lip. I've also turned details into flat pieces using the vacuum.

when I turn the bottom I like to have the bottom continue the curve through the foot. This can be hard to do with the tailstock in place. No problem with the vacuum chuck.

Is it an essential tool? No. If I was starting turning I would invest my money in sharpening and cutting type things. As jamie said you can do bowl without a vacuum chuck but it sure is fun to play with. I built an adaptor for crushing coke cans. My son loved playing with that.

I purposely bought a large maple burl cap even though I knew it exceeded the 20" swing on my 3520. This means I have something to justify the outboard turning stand!

I'll have to build another one I dontated the old one to my sons science class. I'll do that. I think you all would enjoy it. Kids love it. Never let it be said that I don't turn funtional items.
