>I picked up my Jet 1642 this afternoon, put it together and before I put a chunck of wood on it I gave the face plate a spin by hand and the bearings sounded dry and rough. I have been a truck and auto mechanic and have worked on machinery at times and when I hear a bearing make that kind of noise it gets replaced! I turned the machine on and slowly ran the speed up to the max rpm, about 3275, and back down. At about 2800rpm a vibration starts to become noticeable. At 3K rpm it is very noticeable. I made sure all four feet were on the floor, no difference. Played with belt tension, no difference. The vibration is worse with the face plate on, which I would expect. When I looked at the 1642 on the floor at Woodcrafters, it didn't exhibit either problem. Question, has anyone else experienced these issues on their new 1642? TIA Jim S

I'd take the head stock back to the store where you purchased it and have them witness this. They should replace it immediately (if they have another in stock, that is).

Back when I first got my old Jet JWL-1236, Woodcraft replaced the headstock without any protest after I brought it in with a similar problem.

I tested the Jet-JWL-1642EVS extensively before I bought it and found that it was the smoothest operating and quietest machine I've ever seen. You should definitely trust your well honed "mechanic instincts" here. For yours to be making that noise, with that amount of vibration is evidence of a defect. My 1 1/2 year old 1642 doesn't make any noise that I can hear.

>Sorry I haven't gotten back with an answer to my problem, I've been working some long hours lately. I traced the noisey bearing to the motor. I pulled the belt off the spindle shaft and gave it a spin, very quiet and smooth. I then spun the motor and it was noisey. I called Jet and talked to a Tech, told him about the noise, how I traced the noise to the motor and he told me to pull the tag off the motor, take it to the Woodcraft store where I purchased it and have them send the tag to Jet along with a letter of explanation and Jet will send me a new motor. I've delt with WMH group before when I bought a Powermatic 54A jointer and they have been very friendly and "quick to fix the problem". I bought the 1642 because of all the positive posts and reviews by you guys and I am not unhappy with this machine. Even with the noise and slight vibration at certain speeds, it's a GREAT machine and a joy to use compared to my Craftsman. Like a Rolls Royce on smoooth highway compared to a Prarie Schooner on a dry river bed! HA!! Jim S in Beautiful McMinnville,OR
