>I've been struggling with my 1442 since I bought it a few months ago. When I do the outside or inside of a bowl, where it curves from bottom to side, there's an inordinate amount of chatter. At first I thought it was just my technique although I've been turning for 4 years and have made lots of bowls. Took it back to the seller who assured me that everything was in tolerance. We've been back and forth on this many times; last night I (finally) noticed the spindle moves laterally (along the bed) about an eighth inch when changing speeds. Called the Jet rep who assured me that that is normal, and it will no longer moves once the tool is applied to the wood.

Now to me, the spindle shaft shouldn't move at all, other than around and around, or was I indeed just born yesterday?

when you pull or push on the spindle, pull it towards the tailstock, it moves and it will therefore move back into the headstock when pushed against?

If this is t he case, then you need to adjust the locking nut on the left end of the spindle. It is located on the spindle behind the handwheel.

If you remove the handwheel, next on the spindle you'll see a collar with a slit in it. There is a hex head bolt through this slit that tightens it on the shaft by causing it to pinch. If you loosen this collar, then from other end push the spindle in making sure to also push the collar in towards the center, then tighten the bolt back it should take up the play in the shaft.

Depending on how much it moves, you may need to realign the belt pulleys so they are lined up. I think I would move the one on the motor shaft as it appears easier to get to.

Now the above is all based on what you said and what I figured out looking at the parts schematic on the machine and having rebuilt several lathes.

If I have misunderstood the problem, let me know.

Found something that makes it easier to understand. Go to page 20 of manual and read "Changing belt and bearings"? You'll need to just do steps 1 through 4 and then step 9.

It makes more sense now as they indicate the nut (collar) threads on and off and that is the reason I went looking for more information. Most lathes have a threaded nut, not a split ring like the pictorial made it look like. Possible they have two variations on this depending on when it was made.

The seller must've forgotten to tighten it all the way when they put on a new belt in an attempt to fix the chatter problem that's been going on. The problem is still there; they've agreed to get me a new lathe.
