>Ever since I started turning I've been looking at the cutting boards I sell and seeing a bowl inside of them. Decided to give it a go. This WAS a cutting board, but now its a bowl. I guess you could call this a segmented turning, but surely not in the traditional sense. I think this one has "Mother's Day Gift" written on it. About 13" wide, 2" tall, finished with Waterlox.
What'ya think? Should I make some more?

Write up an article (with plenty of photos) how you do this! Not only will it make a great submission to a woodturning magazine ("Woodturning Design" would eat this up) , I'd bet we'd all like to see a version of it posted here.

I have an idea for a "creative" improvement for the next one. During the glue up process I'm going to remove one of the little walnut squares so there'll be a square hole in the finished bowl that'll look like one fell out. I'll include that little square with the bowl. Another idea might be be to replace a square with one with my initials in it or something.
The hard part of making this has already been documented. I have a tutorial on making the cutting board available at Sawmill Creek, at least it was last time I checked. It could be easily adopted towards a bowl as a final product.

My wife has been shaking her head with every new turning that appears out of the basement. She says she never, ever, in her lifetime would have considered me "artistic", yet she cannot deny it.
Who knows whats hidden inside each of us, huh? I always wonder how many Pavarottis, or Monets, or Tiger Woods, exist in the world but have never tried singing, or painting, swinging a club.. I always figure its a happy, marvelous coincidence that such people happened to find the thing they were wonderful at. I hope each of us finds that one thing.

I think you have a creative and interesting design there. As far as sales go, I'm willing to bet that a complete salad bowl set with this design would be excellent. 6 smaller bowls and one large bowl...you could get creative with variations on the theme when it comes to making the larger bowl.

>Thanks Dick. Those little pieces really aren't little pieces at all when I cut them. I do them on the tablesaw and they have to come off of the saw joint worthy, any little flaws show up quite dramatically. They're too thin to joint any further after sawing. I use a Forrest WWII blade in a Jet Cab saw with a Jointech fence to get the precise measurements. Each piece is 1/32" wider than the previous.
