Bacote Pen Blanks

Ruth

>Hi All,

I just posted Bacote pen blanks for sale on the "Classifieds" board. These are pieces I've cut off that very large board I ordered to turn the stems for the clay goblets.

If you were in the Chat room the night we discussed an alternate wood I could use in place of the cocobolo, you'll remember bacote was one of the suggestions. It's a beautiful wood to turn, has great grain but is not as complimentary to the pottery as was the cocobolo. Next I'll try Kingwood or Rosewood or Cocobolo! : )

>Ruth,

Believe it or not, some of the mesquite we have here locally in the US can look very close to cocobolo, as well. Texas mesquite usually has a more reddish tone to it than does other mesquite. Seems like everything I turn from mesquite gets snatched up quickly. And you get the "benefit" of all those worm holes, too!

>Cocobolo is a favorit eof mine. Great for a pre-rookie like me to turn and it polishes up so nice. And the color is really something. I use it for knobs and handles too. I made a file/rasp handle with it and made a knob for those knib adjuster things for pens...and several pens. Even made an egg out of a scrap piece just for the heck of it. Buddy at work is making a shifter knob for his car out of it. That's a good idea, but my car is an automatic...oh well.

>Hi Ruth!

I was wondering if you had sold the rest of those blanks?

I bought Sixteen of these Bocote blanks from Ruth a week or so ago. They are very nice! I highly recommend them to the Penturners out there! I thought I might use a few of them for Freedom Pens!

Scott.
