Molly's Vessel

Dave Peebles Lyons, Ohio!

>Hello everyone,

This is a piece that Molly was going to toss into the scrap bin a couple of weeks ago. She had burned the black lines into the piece, but was not happy with the effect. The burning had drifted over into the field of the turning.

I basically begged her to sent it to me, to see what I could do with it.... Heck, I thought.. If I screw it up to much, I can burn it myself.

Here is the result so far, I still have a little more work to do on it. But it was textured between the burned lines. It still needs a finish applied.

I wish I had a pic of it "before" but I don't.

It was great fun to combine my thoughts with Molly's on this piece.

I'll post the final result a little later.

Thanks,

Dave

Before Picture

>I found the before pic. The burning that Molly did is fantastic on this. But you can see how the burning overlapped onto the sapwood on the Walnut. But what a wonderful shape on this little hollow vessel.

>Looks great Molly & Dave. When Molly first posted the pic I was wondering if there was some way of changing the branded part that was in the heartwood to the color of the sap wood. Thus having more contrast in that area. Not sure how one would go about doing that(airbrush maybe).Hope you don't mind I played with the paint brush program a little. Just thinking.

Great Idea!!

Dave Peebles Lyons, Ohio!

>Hi Robin

That is a great idea, one that I never would have thought of. It would almost have to be air brushed on to keep the cool effect of the branding that Molly did. Thanks for the pic!!

This thing may take awhile to get finished.:) So many options to think through.

Thanks Robin,

Dave

>Hi Joel,

Thanks, it has been a lot of fun so far. When I am at the lathe turning, I keep sneaking a peak at it. Thinking of new stuff to try on it. It may take years to finish. :)

Best,

Dave

Thanks Jen

>Hi Jen,

It has been fun to try to do something worth while with it. That remains to be seen. But Molly took most of the pressure off when she said she was going to trash it.

The really cool part of this is that without the internet, and forums like these, I probably would have never met or talked to Molly. I certainly would have never met you, and had the chance to meet so many other great people at the gatherings.

For this, I will always be grateful.

Thanks for hooking me up with so many kind and wonderful people.

Best wishes,

Dave

>I'm glad you posted this "before" picture. It really gives you a sense of what was accomplished.

I love collaborative work! We ought to do this more often. Hmmmmm,...that gives me an idea! (More on this later)

See ya around,

Dominic

>Very nice work, you two!

Dave, my wife says in the Quilt World, this is known as "other people's orphans." It seems you've made this one feel right at home.

I'd be interested to see this piece with a finish on it.

I presently have a small hollow form on the lathe, walnut (got it from Barbara Gill @ Southern States Symposium) w/ about 1/3 of the area the nice white sap wood. I'd like to keep the white. Thinking of using a water based finish...

>Hi Bob,

Tell your wife that I love that phrase "other people's orphans." That seems to fit it perfectly.

I am thinking of a clear spray lacquer for the finish, or maybe something more colorful. We shall see :)

Dave

Thanks,

Dave
