Outstanding job on this! I really like the drawers and the tool holder. But I really, really like the integral tailstock caddy you've built into the ballast box the most. I looked at it and thought, "Why didn't I think of that!"

The Tool Box doesn't get in my way, it actually is set back from the front of the legs. When you get your lathe set up see where you stand when turning and modify the box if needed.(You're going to love the 1642)

Nice job, I was just getting ready to build the ballast box for my 1642 using Dominics plans (Thanks Dominic). Now I will incorporate some of your ideas as well. How is the tool holder on the end of the lathe fastened? Is it just bolted on, and is it low enough to remove tailstock easily, or is the tool rest removeable somehow?

Very attractive cabinet. As Dominic mentioned, your addition of the resting place for the tailstock is a great idea. I am always looking for a place (other than the floor) to put the tailstock of my PM whenever I am turning bowls. Your scheme is exactly what is needed.

Box looks great though. Nice job. Maybe when if I start to be more thoughtful about cleanest I will build one.

Like Lee said, the box is situated so that is far enough back so that it never interferes with your legs or feet.

BTW, great news about the 1642. Adding the ballast box really makes a hell of a difference in the way this lathe behaves. It's good before, but great after.

Those boxes look and fuction so nicely. I hope I can build something half as nice as they are. I'm not very good at straight and square things. That's why I work in the round!

Dom-Beautiful work in your last several posts. I relied significantly on your review and evaluation of the 1642 when making my purchase decision-Thank you! If some one of your obvious turning skill and engineering background likes it that much, it must be one heck of a machine.

For everyone that is waiting on their 1642, Like Dominic said your going to love it. It's not a 3520 but for the money and not having to run 220v to the shop I'm very happy with it to say the least.

The tool caddy is bolted to the bed using the holes that are tapped for a bed extension, the top sits just below the groove that the tailstock slides in.
