>I am interested to hear what people think about the effect of bowl gouge geometry on cutting. More specifically I wonder what differences are found in using a gouge with a deep, small radius flute (glaser deep bowl gouge)vs a larger radius superflute or even deep flute gouge.

My bowl gouges (HTaylor superflute) are getting close to retirement and I am considering replacement with Glaser tools. I like their feel and quality, but don't know if I will like the deep V small radius flute.

>Ralph, it depends on your tool technique. If you cut with the tip of the tool you will love the Glaser; if you cut more with the side you may not like it as well because the chips sometimes tend to "pack in". A more rounded flute will eject the curls or chips much better when cutting with the side of the tool. As in all things, individual preferences and techniques determine the value of these tools. They do hold an edge a long time.

>I changed from a super flute to a glaser when mine wore out and after about 3 bowls, I cant imagine going back. There is definately a differance in "feel" between the two. I typicall cut just off the tip (about 1 O'clock) with the glaser. I agree with TD about chip ejection, the super flute has less tendancy to pack up.
