I don't have a jet but I love my Nova Comet. The tailstock and tool rest move almost effortlesslly so I use it for small turnings. My production work is done on it because I can work faster. It's also really nice to have around when you are working on a vessel that needs a separate foot of mouth inlay. I can turn that piece and add it to the big piece without removing the big piece from the lathe.

The package was evidently shipped upside down since the little motor lever was bearing all the weight and its plastic sleave was worn through. I sealed the box again as I am getting ready for my estate sale On June 12th and have to move everything I am keeping off the property until after the auction. Most of my equipment including my Blount woodlathe will be sold at the auction. I ordered the little Jet so I would have something to keep me busy.

Too cold around here for "farmer johns"!! Here at 8,000 ft above sea level - we dress in goose down and insulated sorrels!! HeH! Actually, it is getting Spring-like now and all of the critters are starting to apear again!! If only we could get some rain~!!

>I have a VS mini and tend to leave the setting on the middle range because I find changing the belt a HUGE PITA. Jet didn't give very good access to the lower end. If I were to do it again I would buy the Delta Midi, or if money were no object I would get the small OneWay .

He said that you lose some of your torque with the VS and in my opinion changing the belt is NOT that hard. Most of the time I stay on the same speed anyway. To me it's a great lathe for the money.

>I bought a Mini belt drive used (like new) for $150.00 about a year ago. Have used it a great deal to turn miniatures. I generally leave on the middle speed as I turn smaller items. If you will be turning a larger piece, then you will need to reduce speed during roughing. Pens and bottle stoppers - just pick one speed and leave it. Looking at Axminster chucks next - have done all work so far on a simple drill chuck / morse taper combo.

You might talk to your local store owner, not the salesguy, and see if he wouldn't let you have one at the old price. He's probably still got one around that he paid the lower wholesale for. Just be sure and let him know that you are a serious buyer.

the wife really likes to use teh mini for pens and etc ( we are proud to be involved in the freedom pen project )

I would buy a Jet-mini today because:

A bargain at Woodcraft, a firm that provides good service and honors its warranties. There are other good sources.

A proven machine of standard design used for several years by hundreds of users and misusers.

Small and light enough for taking out in the backyard or on vacation.

Small and heavy enough to store in a big lathe's stand as ballast if space is limited.

Easily removed/attached bed extension is also a bargain

Good resale, but why would you ever want to?

Many,positive threads & sites, even books & videos about using it.

Parts easily available at resonable cost

It's so quiet that not noticing that it's running poses a safty risk.

It is a modern machine scaled down, but it has the same functional and design qualities of the current crop of fine large lathes. ie. it's a lathe, not a toy or junk.

I guess you think I like mine. I do. It's even painted white! Arch
