Ran into an certified "Old Timer" yesterday [looked at me slightly sideways due to "welder's blindspot"] and learned that to normalise the welded tool rests, all that's needed is to heat to bright red (or non-magnetic) from tip to tip and than let air cool. Oven soaking at temperature is not necessary.

Also told me that any welded O-1 should be normalised for both safety (fatigue cracking) and increased durability. Said the only time he'd "lime-cool" was to get some case hardening plus soften interior structure out of the deal. Did not recommend that course for lathe tool rest as thought would be more likely to result in surface cracking of the hardened "case" when the annealed interior would not hold the surface against vibration and sudden stress (like in a catch that I never get).

Thought you'd like to know. Let me know if you hear different from your smithy.

I talked to one of my knife maker buddies and he said more or less the same thing. When you heat steel to non-magnetic you probably overheat it. If you'll remember the difference in 0-1 between hardening at 1500 and normalizing at 1530. 30 degrees is almost nothing when trying to find the non-magnetic temperature. He said he used to do this years ago when he added a seperate tang to the steel for the knife but now makes them out of one piece so he doesn't do any normalizing anymore.

He said he was speculating on this but felt that the weakest point on a tool rest would be the weld no matter what you did. Especially if the tool post was 1" and the rest was 5/8 or 3/4.

I know when I got my 90 amp el-cheapo welder I welded up several test pieces and tried to break them with a 3lb hammer and my metal vise. I bent the hell out of them but nothing broke. That was using 3/4" tool post with 5/8" tool rest. I did manage to crack one at the weld.

>Left out that the guy said the easiest way to even out the stress in the item was to put the thing in your charcaol grill at the next BBQ, have your cookout, and when the whole thing cools your piece is ready. Plus the charcoal will put a bit of carbon in the surface to extra "wearability." I use a gas grill, but a bit of charcoal is easy to get and way easier than doing the furnace/soaking routine.

He also said that the weld will be the weakest point, but that's expected. The point is to relieve the stress and hardening caused by the weld that make it more likely to break.
